Research Assistant/ SR. Research Assistant

Job Summary

The Yoon Lab is looking for a highly motivated, organized, responsible person who will play a key role in achieving the mission of the lab. Using Drosophila (fruit fly), we aim to discover cellular and molecular mechanisms how metabolic dysfunctions cause human diseases including neurological diseases and cancer. We utilize variety of approaches including genetics, metabolomics, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology as well as confocal and electron microscopy.

 Our group is located in a newly renovated lab space, and is a member of the rapidly growing Functional and Chemical Genomics Program at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

 Responsibilities will include:

- Maintenance of Drosophila stocks

- Ordering supplies, maintaining inventory, and generating essential stock solutions

- Conducting genetic experiments to assess gene function in Drosophila

- Conducting basic molecular biology and biochemistry experiments such as PCR and cloning

- Prep of Drosophila tissue samples and imaging using light and fluorescent microscopes

- Detailed documentation of experiments and results

- Participation in lab and departmental meetings

 

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA/MS degree in one of the biological sciences, chemistry or physics, or substitute 4 years of relevant laboratory experience for degree, and a minimum of 3 years of relevant laboratory experience or a combination of education and relevant laboratory experience.

  Apply developing knowledge to coordinate day-to-day work, complete a variety of detailed tasks and assignments. Basic knowledge of Internet software, order processing system, data base and Microsoft Office software. Must be detail oriented and work independently as well as a team player.

 Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and protocols/procedures. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to compute basic mathematical operations, i.e., rate, ratio, percent, molarity, and unit conversion. Ability to organize and perform precise and accurate work when dealing with samples and chemicals.  

 Ability to speak effectively to present ideas and data analysis to supervisor, who will decide how to proceed. Suggest changes to experiments and procedures. Ability to exchange ideas and procedures with co-workers and other labs.

 

 Preferred Qualifications

5 – 7 years of relevant laboratory experience. Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred but not required: animal husbandry (worms, flies, fish, mice, etc.), molecular biology (e.g., cloning and PCR), microbiology/sterile technique, cell culture, protein biochemistry, immunolabeling, histology, and/or microscopy.

 Work Hours

Typically Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:30, but must be willing to work occasional overtime, weekends, and/or holidays.

 Physical Demands

Regularly required to stand, use manual dexterity, talk or hear; Frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms; occasionally sit; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; vision abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 Potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles. May work with toxic, caustic chemicals, radioactive materials, and liquid nitrogen. Potential risk of electrical shock. Occasional exposure to cold 4C, and/or extreme cold -80C from freezers. Noise level is usually moderate.
