ACE/NPS GA: Fort Pulaski National Monument Education Program Internship

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking ONE Education Program Intern to serve with the education program at Fort Pulaski National Monument. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a deep interest in advancing their career goals in resource education on our public lands out of Fort Pulaski National Monument, GA.

Fort Pulaski National Monument (FOPU) was established by Presidential Proclamation No. 1713 (43 Stat. 1968) on October 15, 1924, and was later transferred to the Department of the Interior as part of the national park system in 1933. The national monument, which sits between Savannah and Tybee Island on the Georgia coast, encompasses 5,623 acres on Cockspur and McQueen's Islands. Within this setting, the monument contains a broad range of significant resources that reflect both the natural and cultural history of Georgia on the Atlantic coast. FOPU preserves and interprets the 19th century masonry fort and associated landscape that illustrate the evolution of civil engineering and military technology, a continuum of historic resources from colonial times to the present day, and approximately 5,000 acres of nearly pristine salt marsh on McQueen's and Cockspur Islands in Savannah, Georgia.

Compensation: The intern will contribute 40 hours per week and receive a living allowance of $400/week paid out biweekly for food and incidental living expenses. Finding housing is the responsibility of the intern as FOPU does not have park housing.

Position Description:

Duties for this position include:

• Assisting with the park's education program by creating and providing curriculum-based programming for educational field trips
• Assist park's Historic Weapons Coordinator with creating curriculum- based black powder programs for school groups
• Assist in creating curriculum- based material for the park website
• Answering routine visitor questions and providing information and directions to the public
• Providing informal interpretation and safety information while roving in the fort and on park trails
• Assisting with outreach to area schools and soliciting area school visits to the park
• Provide children's programming for special events
• Some opportunities will be available for cross-training in interpretation for the general public and serving in the visitor center information desk

Schedule: 40 hours per week for the 28-week long commitment. Schedule will be from 8:45am - 5:15 pm, five days per week. Weekend service is required. The intern may request time off for holidays, travel, etc. within reason.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a degree or certificate (or be pursuing a degree or certificate) in education. Additional coursework in history, museum studies, environmental science, natural or cultural resource management, biology, ecology, or other related disciplines appropriate to the position is preferred.  A combination of relevant education and appropriate experience is also acceptable.

Requirements:

• Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
• Must be between ages of 18-30.
• A valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation; a personal vehicle is required as there is not public transportation available to and from the park.
• Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
• Must be able to interact successfully with thousands of students from many diverse backgrounds.
• Must be willing to handle serving both indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Georgia in the winter and spring has a mostly mild climate, but has the potential to still be hot and humid in the early spring and will be hot and humid in summer.
• Must be able to complete tasks well independently and/or on a team.
• Ability and willingness to undergo a federal background check is required.
• Proficiency in English is required.

Preferred:

• Experience teaching/interacting with children
• Experience in public speaking, teaching, environmental or cultural education, or interpretation.
• Some knowledge'or the willingness to quickly learn--the history of the United States, including but not limited to the United States Civil War, the American Revolution, Reconstruction, and the history of southeastern United States, especially the Georgia and the South Carolina coasts.

The intern must be willing to represent ACE and the NPS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
