Forestry Technician – Recreation Focus - Lake Tahoe

The Great Basin Institute, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service’s Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), is recruiting two (2) Forestry Technicians (Recreation) to enroll in GBI’s AmeriCorps program and support a variety of recreation resource projects. The Technician will work in support of LTBMU’s recreation program including contacting and providing information to the public while performing maintenance duties at numerous recreation sites around Lake Tahoe. Primary duties will include:
• Providing information about recreation opportunities and resource management practices, regulations and current conditions to Forest visitors;
• Assuring recreation sites and areas are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans and schedules for inspection, maintenance and cleanup;
• Maintaining and cleaning developed sites, roadside and/or backcountry dispersed sites including toilets, road closure gates, water systems, picnic tables, fire rings, barriers, dumpsters and other miscellaneous structures;
• Repairing damaged facilities, or closing areas of facilities when hazards cannot be promptly eliminated;
• Performing safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and taking or recommending corrective action; and
• Explaining Forest Service rules and regulations to Forest visitors and coordinating enforcement activities with local Forest Service law enforcement personnel to protect life and property.

Timeline & Compensation:  
Longer Term
• 27-week appointment beginning May 11, 2018 (or upon earliest availability)
• Living allowance: $13,153.20
• AmeriCorps Education Award: $2,907.50
• $15 camping per diem
Shorter Term
• 13-week appointment beginning June 11, 2018 (or upon earliest availability)
• Living allowance: $6,508.80
• AmeriCorps Education Award: $1,538.36
• $15 camping per diem



Location:
The Technician will be based in South Lake Tahoe, CA and will report to the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Supervisor’s Office.

Qualifications:
Technical requirements:
o Flexibility and intellectual curiosity related to the management of forestry and Forest Service recreation resources and activities – applicants with prior experience working with the USFS and/or LTBMU encouraged to apply;
o Knowledge of and/or interest in learning about recreation operation and maintenance plans to schedule daily activities, establish maintenance schedules and inspect cleanup operations;
o Ability to think creatively about and implement solutions to matters related to maintenance of facilities and infrastructure;
o Ability to work on a variety of different projects with changing priorities;
o Ability to work and coordinate with other resource professionals, program managers, and the general public;
o Self-motivated with ability to maintain a positive attitude while working in a diverse team environment;
o Ability to walk long distances in challenging terrain and harsh and rapidly changing mountainous conditions, and otherwise be in good physical condition;
o Possess a valid, clean, state-issued driver’s license with the ability to operate a 4WD vehicle on or off paved roads; and
o Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education awards), (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) and federal criminal background checks, (4) adhere to the rules, regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service Agreement; and (5) not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.
