AmeriCorps Early Literacy Tutor

Literacy First Tutors work full-time in a low-income elementary school teaching young children to read. Literacy First places highly trained AmeriCorps tutors in low-income elementary schools in Austin, TX to ensure K-2nd grade children advance to grade level in reading before third grade. 75% of students in our program either fully reach or make measurable progress reading at grade level helping close the opportunity gap in Austin. What's Involved?

*Commit to serve as Literacy First Tutor for 10 months from September through June
*Provide daily 1-on-1 tutoring to 10 K-2nd grade students
*Teach and learn using a research-based curriculum
*Participate in community service projects with local non-profits

Desired Qualifications:

*Interest in literacy, education, community service, or non-profits
*Desire to work with young children ages 5-8
*Interest in social justice and providing educational equity
*Responsible, professional, motivated
*Ability to work cohesively on a team
*Some college required
*Proficient computer skills, including data entry and email correspondence

AmeriCorps Requirements:

*U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident alien
*Commitment to serve 10 months, September 2, 2019 through June 29, 2020
*Complete 1700 hours of service by June 29, 2020
*Serve 45 hours per week
